In addition to normal acupuncture treatments, we offer a variety of additional Traditional Chinese Medicine options that you can choose from to enhance your treatment. In some cases, your acupuncturist may request that you add a particular option because it will greatly benefit your treatment.
Cupping is a technique that uses suction to apply glass cups to specific areas of the body such as the back or abdomen. The cups are held in place or moved along specific meridians in order to promote the circulation of blood and stimulate the nervous system. This technique is often used to relax muscles, alleviate pain, or treat coughing and dyspnea. The sensation is often compared to that of massage, and patients agree that this therapeutic modality is relaxing, soothing and effective.
Moxibustion or moxa is the burning of the herb, mugwort (Artemesia vulgaris) over specific acupuncture points or other areas of the body to facilitate healing. Moxa has a warming, nourishing quality that is able to penetrate deeply into muscles, tendons, joints and the body's entire energetic system. It has several therapeutic functions including building blood, promoting circulation, facilitating the regeneration of connective tissue, and alleviating pain. This medicinal herb also has the ability to promote a profound sense of calm and relaxation, restore strength and energy.
Gua Sha literally means "to scrape away fever," but this scraping method has multiple therapeutic applications. The technique involves repeated, pressured strokes over lubricated skin with the smooth edge of a ceramic spoon. Like cupping, Gua Sha promotes circulation and stimulates the nervous system. It may be used to reduce fever, relax muscles, alleviate pain, assuage nausea and vomiting, or treat coughing and dyspnea.
